NICSSとは

Address by Chairman

会長 小尾 高史氏

IC cards are the only means that can provide a highly reliable electoronic IDs.

The internet, readily accessible through smartphones and computers, has become an integral part of modern life, enabling people to enjoy a wide range of services from the comfort of their homes. However, this increased connectivity also brings heightened risks of cyberattacks and data breaches, underscoring the critical importance of robust security measures. Specifically, technologies that enhance the security of mobile devices and networks used by both individuals and businesses are now essential.

In today‘s digital society, building trust is paramount. By implementing effective identity verification and data protection protocols, we can foster trust between users, government agencies, and businesses. This, in turn, creates an environment where services can be used confidently, facilitating the overall digital transformation (DX) of our society.

The Next Generation IC Card System Study Group (NICSS) was established on December 9, 1998, under the leadership of former Chairman Nagaaki Ohyama. Its primary focus has been on IC cards incorporating advanced authentication technologies for robust identity verification, and the group has worked diligently to promote their adoption. Currently, we are actively promoting the use of My Number Cards and the Japanese PKI, while also engaging with organizations in Europe, the United States, and East Asia to stay informed about global trends and share information about Japan’s advancements in this area.

As I assume the role of chairman, I recognize the critical importance of maintaining the continuous operation of the My Number Card, which is equipped with the JPKI. This remains the only means by which residents can exercise their rights online, and it is crucial for further advancing the digitalization of our society.

IC cards and the secure elements embedded within them are tamper-proof devices, resistant to forgery, alteration, or manipulation. They serve as vital tools for managing digital IDs, storing sensitive data, and encrypting information, thereby ensuring the protection of personal data and the reliability of authentication processes. Furthermore, with secure elements now being integrated into smartphones and IoT devices, the secure storage of digital IDs and authentication information is significantly improved, creating an environment where users can confidently use their devices. However, we still need more compelling use cases that highlight the convenience these technologies provide. Further development of such use cases and improvement of the user experience is vital.

Through these ongoing efforts, our study group aims to be a valuable resource of information for individuals, companies, and organizations alike, driving the wider adoption of secure devices like IC cards. We deeply appreciate your continued understanding and support.
